October 2010

Sign-up for the October 9, 2010 Read-a-thon!

Can you believe it’s time for another read-a-thon?! I’m so excited! The read-a-thon means homemade cinnamon rolls and general junk food goodness. Mmm…

Anyway, the second read-a-thon this year is set for Saturday, October 9th. We’re already gearing up, so this read-a-thon is going to rock.

The  Read-a-thon will start: October 9th  at 5am Pacific (1pm GMT). You can click over to the start times page to check the starting time in your timezone. Remember that if it’s more convenient to you, you could  start either earlier or later, as well as participate for only part of the 24 hours. Very few people make it through the entire 24-hour period without sleeping, so don’t let that discourage you! Sleep is definitely allowed.

For more information on the Read-a-thon, you can read our FAQ. If you have a question that isn’t answered there, you can leave us a comment or e-mail DeweyReadathon at gmail. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible!

Sign ups for being a cheerleader will be posted soon, as well as sign ups for hosting a mini-challenge. If you’re new to the read-a-thon and are wondering what these mini-challenge things are, please check our FAQ!

Also, if you’d like to donate a prize, please e-mail us at DeweyReadathon at gmail. It’d be very much appreciated! Here’s a list of the prizes donated for the April 2010 Read-a-thon in case you’re wondering what to donate. Anyone can donate prizes!

Another thing you can do: Grab a button from the FAQ page, display it proudly, and help us spread the word.

Go ahead and sign up!

  1. Yay! I’m excited to participate in this one. That will actually be the day after my birthday, so it will be nice to cozy down to some great books after a crazy birthday the night before. 🙂 Maybe I’ll get a new book or two to add to my pile??? I’ll keep my fingers crossed on that one!

  2. Darn. I was looking forward to this but can’t do it because I’ll be at the BlogHer Food Conference.

Y’all have fun – and good luck!

  3. I’m very excited about the read-a-thon! Missed the last one because of drill but this time, I free!! Hope everyone will join us periodically on the Avid Readers Unite fan page on facebook for book chats. See ya there!

  4. I’m very excited, also posted the sign up link over on the Bookobsessed Forum I’m a member of to bring some others on over! Now to start lining up the books to choose from! Thanks for having the read-a-thon, it’s a lot of fun!

  5. This will be my first read-a-thon – can’t wait! I’m going to use it to celebrate getting through the first quarter of this new school year.

  6. This will be my third Read-a-Thon. It was so much fun the last two times and I’m really looking forward to the entire 24 hours again.

  7. This will be my first read-a-thon! I’m really excited! I’m going to start making a specific TBR pile just for the read-a-thon!

  8. I’ve signed up again!! I’m also looking for pledges/sponsors to make donations to our local literacy program Project READ. I definitely learned that I need to be more organized. Reading, posting, reading other bloggers, and keeping up with the contests was consuming. Anyone have suggestions or recommendations.

Sign up to sponsor me at noumena12books.blogspot.com!!!

  9. I’m going to give it a try! I am a little doubtful that I can make it all 24 hours but it will be fun trying I’m sure.

  10. And I should mention, my stepkiddos, Rocketboy and Rocketgirl, will be joining me for the RAT this year. I’ve signed her blog up but not his just yet.

  11. I’ve been looking forward to it — I wasn’t able to participate in the last two so I’m very excited about this. I won’t be able to do the entire day but I am definitely in. At least one of my children will be joining me as well, hopefully both.

  12. YAY! I’ve been waiting for this as well! Guess what? I hafta work again!!! waaahhhh!!!! Well, gonna prepare ahead of time so that every second I’m not working, I’ll be reading! And Snacking! And napping! sigh…. whatalife! Can’t wait! Oh! Button placed on FB, Twitter and my other blogs too, trying to recruit folks. Truly a great time last April, and I even won a book!

  13. I’ve been waiting for this since the one in Spring ended… even requested the day off work a couple months ago. My first 24 hour read-a-thon, and anyone who interrupts me is going to be sorry.

  14. So excited for this ‘thon! It’s my third time, and I hopefully have things in a bit more of a routine this go round. Come on October 9th!

  15. would like to join coz last april would be my first but there was an unexpected out of town trip wasn’t able to participate ;( so now I would do so.

  16. This will be my 2nd readathon. This time I am back home in England instead of in Japan so my book selection is a LOT larger 😀 I also have soo much compulsary reading for my English Lit modules, a readathon is just what I need to try and get through that pile. Alas, it is mainly Dickens so I cannot see me getting through many books 🙁 But yay for trying!

  17. I’ll see how much I can do. It also depends if I can get internet service (it has tendency to go down for a period of time or its not working) fully cooperating. I can’t promise much, though, as I will be required to have regular meals and there won’t be a lot of coffee provided when I need it. I suppose Coke will work just as well, as I had one at around 8:30/9 pm Pacific and its now about 1:37 am and I am fully awake. I guess I can get the Starbucks VIA before I leave and use that as my caffeine source at around 3 am.

  18. My first read-a-thon – I’m just looking for an excuse to read as much as I secretly want to every day. I’m going to try and get some kind of charity sponsorship hookup so it doesn’t seem so self-indulgent.

    Looking forward to it!

  19. Wow! I cannot believe it will almost be a year since my 1st read-a-thon. I’m super stoked, but at the same time worried. It’s been quite some time since I have been able to stay up past 11. Oh no…but I’ll try no doubt!

    HAPPY readings!!!

  20. I found out about the last read-a-thon after it was already half over so I’m very excited to know ahead of time about this upcoming one!

  21. I can’t wait! I’ve neglected my book blog for many moons now, but Dewey and her readathon is what made me start blogging about books in the first place and it’s a reminder that I blog because I love books and love talking about them! Already planning my pile o’ books, can’t wait to see what the rest of you come up with. 🙂 And I accidentally put an old link to my website, but the one in this comment is the correct one.

  22. This is going to be the best way to end my reading/blogging hiatus. 🙂 I think I’m going to try both reading and cheerleading this time around.

  23. One more reason to love the Internets… just learned about the Read-a-Thon via a link within a blog I just found via a different link in another blog. And she told two friends, and they told two friends…. Very cool project and something I seriously needed to kick-start my reading again. Thanks so much for continuing it!

  24. This would be my first 24hr read-a-thon! Am looking forward to it although I doubt I’ll be able to read much. However, I think, it will be a lovely experience!:D

  25. This will be my second read-a-thon, and I am SO excited.

The last read-a-thon ended up having a pretty huge impact on my life, actually. All through my childhood I was a voracious reader, but during college I was so busy that I fell out of the habit, and my booklessness continued even after graduation. Participating in the read-a-thon reintroduced me to the joys of reading…I’ve been devouring books again ever since! : D

  26. Just signed up! This is my first read-a-thon and I’m so excited to be able to finally participate!

I don’t have a blog, I signed up using my Twitter page. I hope that’s okay. I used to have a book blog, but gave it up when I decided I wasn’t able to find the joy in reading when I felt obligated to review every book, read certain kinds of books, etc. I hope to start up blogging once I feel more comfortable with it. Now I blather on about books over at my Twitter page (@notarevolution).

  27. This is my first readathon and I’ve submitted the form to host a mini-challenge! Should I not have done that since I haven’t participated before? Oh well, either way I’ll be here…reading or challenging 🙂 Can’t wait. My husband will be out of town so I’m completely available. Yay!

  28. I’ve never done a readathon before, but I have such a bad tendency to start to read books and then lose interest after a chapter or two, this will be a great way to make myself read a whole one (and probably more than one!) in one sitting. I’m really excited!

  29. I was seven years old when I last participated in a Read-a-Thon; I hope the intervening years come in handy for strategy, cuz I’m pretty sure I had gobs-of-energy on my side back then. Fortunately I’ll have Mr. BIP to cheer me (and, okay, lots of other people too) on and on and on…

  30. I have NEVER participated in anything I had to spell “participated” for!! But I want …no NEED to be a cheerleader for this thing! Oh, and read. Right.

  31. This is my first time. I’ve got a pile of books that I can’t seem to get to, so this is a good excuse to catch up on my reading list. Thanks for the motivation!

  32. This will be my first read-a-thon. I read a TON this summer, but once school started, I was down for the count. Too busy reading workbooks and planning English lessons. Looking forward to reading through some of the stack on my bed-side table. Thanks to MissWisabus over at http://www.misswisabus.com for referring me!

  33. I already commented (I think) but I wanted to add that I’m using the read-a-thon to raise money for Books for Africa. (I couldn’t justify sitting and reading for 24 hours and messing up my family’s weekend just for fun!)

The link to donate is http://www.firstgiving.com/amyrhoda

    I’m getting excited!

  34. This is my first time, as well. I won’t be reading the whole 24 hours, either, since I’ll have some company in the morning. But I will read as long as possible 🙂 I’m so excited!!

  35. Here I am, signing up at the last moment! But here I am! Looking forward to a grand October nineth!

    Good luck all readers! 🙂

  36. This read-a-thon is perfect since I’ve just put up my own blog! Can’t wait to choose the books I’ll be reading! Never mind if it’s exam week at school. Ha ha!

  37. Great idea! 9 october is first birthay of biggest book blog in Bulgaria – Knigolandia (it means Land of Books in bulgarian).
So we are happy to join you and read and drink for 24 hours!
    Good luck!

  38. I have an exam this weekend, so I hope I can finish it in time to actually participate in the Read-a-Thon this year.

  39. This will be my 2nd read-a-thon.

Extremely excited! I will be visiting my sister that day so I will probably get less reading done than last time, but it will still be fun!

  40. Is this only for book bloggers? I want to participate, but I don’t have a blog. I thought I would just keep up with my status on Goodreads.

    Is anyone else on Goodreads?

  41. I had completely forgotten about this until I saw Felicia’s blog post! Can’t wait to start reading:)

  42. I finally decided to sign up. This will be my first year participating, and with two little kids, I’m not sure how many hours I’ll really be able to devote. But I’m in!

  43. Ok, I’m officially signed up now! I really thought I had done this wayyy back when sign-ups first opened, but couldn’t find my name on here anywhere. So, it’s here now! YAY! 🙂 Looking forward to spending the day with you guys tomorrow!!!

  44. Just signed up! I’ve meant to try to do this, but this is the first time I’ll be able to. My housemates have been appraised of the situation and are promising to feed and water me…

  45. Signed up. Would use my reading blog, but that’s in hiatus.

Probably going to use the time to finish off books for one of my classes (it was already marked for this weekend anyways), read another book I’m in the middle of, and some lighter/more interesting fiction that hold my attention better. XD

  46. Can’t wait! This bi-anual event really motivates me to keep reading and share with others our passion for literature….Gracias! Thanks!

  47. Well, this is my second Read-a-Thon. My first was April 2009 and I had to create a blog so I could participate. Thanks for that. I’m looking forward to participating without tearing my hair out about how to post on the blog! See everybody in 8 hours.

  48. Hey all – I had REALLY hoped I could participate on some level when I signed up (linky #178), but it looks like Paula and I won’t be able to do it 🙁 Good luck to all.

  49. Not sure how much I will read today while packing for a trip. But it is nice to take a day to focus sometime on reading!! Hoping to finish two books today. Shiver and I Capture the Castle.

  50. I just signed up, but I’m ready. My blog, SOTS Promo, is an extension of Sistahs on the Shelf, the website I run reviewing African-American lesbian fiction. Hope to get a lot read today, so here I go.

  51. Can you fix my link? Like Heather, I hate how Mr. Linky remembers old addresses. I tried to delete all the extra stuff, but it still posted some obscure book I read a million years ago. I’m #442, by the way, having signed up after the Readathon started.

  52. Thank you for the wonderful job you guys have done setting up the read-a-thon this year! It’s going great!!! This is my 2 year participating & honestly this year’s mini-challenges are better & I just have an overall better feeling about it. I say that’s thanks you you guys!!! 😀

  53. Starting with Coraline. By the way, I was thinking what a waste for me to have so many unread books when I woke up this morning. Good thing I checked Twitter and found out about this.
