Hour 12 – Coffee Is Your Best Friend

fyi-10

HOUR 12 IS UPON US, MY FRIENDS! And if you’re looking at this post right now, you’re kick-butt because you’ve made it to the halfway point and you’re still here! YAY YOU!

I apologize to the non-coffee drinkers amongst us, but right about now you’re needing something to keep you going! Since everything else is illegal, YAY FOR COFFEE!  Not hating on tea but coffee is just boss, and this post is to encourage coffee-lovers to pour another cup! There’s actually a lot of encouraging research pointing to the fact that coffee is pretty darn good for us–in moderation, of course.

If you’d like to take a break and read about coffee (it’s still reading and it counts!), feel free to check out the links below:

DISCLAIMER: Of course, friends, don’t drink more coffee than is right for you. And remember to rest and sleep up well when the ‘thon concludes! We don’t want anyone getting sick or having severe read-a-thon jetlag. This post does NOT in any way encourage the over-consumption of coffee or caffeine. Enjoy responsibly! 😉

Enjoy your cup and get back to kickin’ those pages! It’s been fun hosting Hours 11 & 12 but I’m signing off. Now I must get back to my own reading and my lovely java juice. Cheers!

  1. Just wanted to kindly point on an error in your post. You have copied and pasted the questions twice, and so I got really confused for a second.

Thanks for hosting these last couple of hours!:)

  2. 1. I’m currently reading Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Chew, vol 1
    2. I haven’t finished any books yet… I’m 80 pages away from finishing Daughter of Smoke & Bone, though
    3. I still haven’t started GEMINA, the book I’m most excited for, but it’s coming! I know it will keep me awake because I will want to finish it in one sitting. So it’s coming.
    4. I’ve had little interruptions here and there but I don’t think that they’ve severely hindered me or ruined the ‘thon.
    5. I don’t typically watch the clock when I read… but it always surprises during Dewey’s how slowly I really read.

  3. 1. What are you reading right now?
Right now I am still reading When the Heavens Fall by Marc Turner and every hour I go back to reading Sensing Light by Mark A. Jacobson. Changing between books to keep things interesting!

    2. How many books have you read so far?
One but I had only 30 pages left to go in the beginning of the readathon. Yay me!

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I have two dogs that need to go on three walks per day. I also have a partner who has to deal with the dogs and every household chore including cooking when it’s readathon time.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
Nothing surprises about the readathon me but I’m very happy to see a community that loves reading and is so open and accepting to diversity (because of having read so many books I assume – reading educates).

  4. Oh, and I am surprised that in a post all about coffee, that there wasn’t a reference (or gif) to Gilmore Girls!!!

  5. 1. What are you reading right now?
    1984

    2. I’ve finished one book and am about 2/3 through this one.
    3. I am looking forward to Harvest Home (up next).

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I have had half a day of interruptions from my 2 kiddos and hubby. For some reason, as soon as I pick up a book all 3 feel like they have to have a convo with mommy at that very minute. So I am hoping to get a lot more reading done once they go to bed.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How hard it seems to me to keep my mind in the book I am reading and let hubby do the rest.

  10. Mid-Event Survey

    1. What are you reading right now? A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller
    2. How many books have you read so far? Finished 2, read 5 chapters of a third and working on finishing the above mentioned book for a fourth
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Still looking forward to The Bride Wore Coveralls by Debra Ullrick, I haven’t gotten to it yet!
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Not really for the first several hours, but when my husband got home from work, they increased. I tried to get back to reading as fast as possible, and plan on going into my headset and listening to music to further cut down on distractions.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How much fun it is! The blog posts are interesting and I love checking out each mini challenge!

  11. 1 I’m reading This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp
    2 2
3 I am looking forward to reading The Graveyard bok by Neil Gaiman and My Best Friend’s Exorcism
4 Yes, Not very well, which is why I only have two books done
5 It surprises me how fast time is going and how little I’ve read

  12. 1. What are you reading right now? Nerve by Jeanne Ryan

    2. How many books have you read so far? Three

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? This was my anticipated read and it has definitely lived up to the hype!

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I have had two hour long phone calls to friends today, oopsy! I treated those as my rest periods and walked around the room whilst speaking to move my body a little before getting back to my reading.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How adrenaline fulled sitting in one spot and reading all day can be!

  13. 1) I am currently reading My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. I can’t say much about it yet because I just started it.
    2) I finished The Creeping by Alexandra Sirowy (great book), which I had started prior to the readathon and I finished The Prisoner of Hell Gate by Dana Wolff (total waste of time).
    3) I’m really looking forward to Pet Sematary by Stephen King. I saw the movie a looong time ago and it scared the bejuzzus out of me. I’m hoping the book will also scare me and help me stay up in the wee hours.
    4) I hate to admit it, but my biggest interruption so far was that I took a nap. I hate I skipped out on an hour or two of the readathon, but I was just sooo sleepy. I’m not a morning person. I’m all fired up now though, so I’m determined to make it to the end.
    5) This is a hard one. I guess the most surprising thing has been my feelings about the second book I read, The Prisoner of Hell Gate. I really thought I would like it, but it was really slow in the beginning and then the ending was incredibly horrible, so I’m really mad now that I wasted my time reading it. My Best Friend’s Exorcism looks fun though, so hopefully it will put me in a better mood.

  14. 1. I’m choosing my next book right now. Don’t know which it’ll be!
    2. Just the one.
    3. I want to see if I can read a new release.
    4. Yes! Responsibilities suck, but I’m having fun seeing how fast I can read regardless.
    5. I’m surprised how long it took me to read 400 pages, usually feels like less time!

  15. 1. What are you reading right now? I am reading Born in Fire by Nora Roberts
    2. How many books have you read so far? Just one. Kids had soccer this morning and afternoon, so my reading time was limited at the start.
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Hmmm….I don’t think I have one book I am most looking forward to. What I am most looking forward to is being able to truly read uninterrupted as my house settles down for the night.
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Other than the 2 soccer games this morning, which consumed about 2 hours each, I have had some minor ones – kids, dog, life…but I am a Mom first so I attended the needs quickly, delegated what I could and got back to reading. I stumbled a bit after I finished my first book because it was such an emotional one. It destroyed me so I had to talk about it with my hubby, walk around the house and check in on here before I could move on.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I don’t think I am really surprised by anything yet.

  16. 1. What are you reading right now? – Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty
    2. How many books have you read so far? 3 short, 65 pgs of req’d reading for a class, 1 hr audio, and 50 pages of current books
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I think I am going to start Highest Duty – Story of Capt Sully – current book is not gripping me
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? No, not many interruptions, I have been by myself most of the day. I have just lost focus because the book is not very good. So now listening and grading papers!
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I spend a lot of time on social media to see what everyone else is reading. My TBR pile was supposed to shrink but I think has increased by at least 25. 🙂

  17. 1. What are you reading right now?
Im currently reading “The Little Bookshop in Paris” (2016) by Nina George. Its amazing.

    2. How many books have you read so far?
    I’m reading my second book.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
    The book I’m currently reading.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Yeah, I’ve had. But not so much by non-readathon stuff as challenges, cheering, communicating with other participants.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
Have much time one can use on the challenges. And how much I enjoy this event. I don’t want it to stop.

  18. 1. What are you reading right now?
    Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

    2. How many books have you read so far?
I started the readathon with Frankenstein, then switched to Cheddar (yes, the cheese!) and finished it, now on to Lab Girl. I am saving fiction for nighttime.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Finishing Frankenstein, I mean you have to wait until it gets dark, right?

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I had an hour of volunteer commitment, but when I got there they had enough and I could leave 🙂 Other than my dog, it’s pretty quiet here.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
This is my second one and last time I spent a lot of breaks on Twitter. But this time I am finding that I just want to read and stay off social media somewhat…that I have given myself this day to just read…course, that might change tonight 🙂

  19. 1. Reading Nickeled & Dimed, a book about a journalist who spent about a year working different low-wage jobs h trying to survive. Lots of privelege & problematic language, but I’m enjoying it so far?

    3. You were here!
    4. Mainly texts, friends asking for stuff, some youtubers I love posting.
    5. How slow I am at reading & how fast every hour goes!

  20. 1. What are you reading right now?

Currently the autobiography of the writers of Berenstain Bears.

I’ve completed 3. The 4th one I’ll probably be done with this within the hour, though.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
    Practical Magic and Hamilton!

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Not really. I’ve been taking small breaks and keep surprising myself by being ahead of my estimated reading speed (I thought this book would take me until 9:30!)

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
Lol, I answered that one up there, actually! I also was surprised by how much I loved Norwegian Wood. I can’t wait to read more by Haruki Murakami. If Wind Up Bird Chronicles wasn’t so huge, I would substitute a book out for it….well…hmmm…maybe I will….

  21. 1. I’m currently reading The Underground Railroad
    2. 2
    3. Number 9 Dream
    4. Have you had many interruptions? Yes. I have a 5 year old. Even with my husband taking her out most of the day, she has a hard time understanding why I can’t play with her. She’s asleep now so hopefully I get more reading done.
    5. how much time social media sucks up and impacts reading time 🙂

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Not really, just food breaks.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I like all my picks
    4. Have you had many interruptions? They are my own making. I Got caught up in too much socializing. How did you deal with those? For the second half I am going to try to stay away from FB. Lol.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How much reading I have actually gotten in. How friendly and supportive strangers are. This is an amazing event!

  26. I am reading “Truly, Madly, Guilty” by Lianne Moriarty. She signed my book at a book event, but I have been struggling to find time to read. Today has been lovely and I will finish the book tonight. My daughter and I are enjoying our reading day together, we are reading Fablehaven and she is reading a Magic Tree House book to me. We did a volunteer project this morning at her school to decorate for red ribbon week. Took another break to carve pumpkins and get a face painting at a local grocery store. My kiddo was excited to wear her Halloween costume for the contest. Later this afternoon, I took her to a birthday party. But we have gotten a lot of reading done so far- and breaks in the middle have been good. Happy reading to everyone!

  27. 1. Currently reading Dewey: the Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World.
    2. Still on my first book.
    3. My readathon goal is to read books about books. I’m excited to start Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore.
    4. I’ve had many family interruptions, but I’m taking the relaxing approach you mentioned in an early blog. It’s not about the number of books but the sheer joy of taking time to read.
    5. Any surprises? I feel like I now need to be more of an advocate for libraries and books. And I want to host some mini challenges during the next readathon.

  28. 1. What are you reading right now? Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
    2. How many books have you read so far? One.
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I don’t expect to get to another book other than Cry Wolf.
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? No interuptions really. Just the need for bathroom breaks and food breaks. There are advantages to being single!
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? That I’m not at all caught up in any need to read a certain amount. That its more about having fun reading uninterrupted that is what I like about it.

  29. 1. Bird Box by Josh Malerman
    2. This is book 5
    3. I want to read at least 1000 pages. I’ve read 582. 😬

  30. 1. What are you reading right now?
    The Chocolate Bunny Brouhaha

    2. How many books have you read so far?
I’ve only finished one – Spy Ski School by Stuart Gibbs. And I only had 130 pages to go when I started

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
I’m hoping to get some rereading done, but at the rate I’m going, that doesn’t appear to be going to happen.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I don’t feel like I’ve had interruptions, but I don’t seem to be getting as much read as I thought I would. I think it’s more distractions that interruptions.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I’ve put in about 3.5 hours of work, half an hour of homework, and two hour-long naps. Due to aforementioned midterms, I got 2-4 hours of sleep each of Thursday and Friday nights, so I’m really asking a lot of my brain to stay engaged. But, my brain is obviously as excited as I am to read for fun, so we’re getting by.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? Despite the addition of Litsy to my RAT social media rotation, I’ve spent much less time checking out what others have shared than I have reading, probably for the first time. I think this too is related to the fact that I have been looking forward to this with so much anticipation since I can’t justify pleasure reading when there are things I really need to be doing instead.

Thanks for hosting, you guys are the best!

  33. 1. What are you reading right now? Pavane, by Keith Roberts.
    2. How many books have you read so far? None, but I think I will read 2 books by the end.
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I like all the books I have planned, but not sure which I will pick when I finish my 1st book.
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I didn’t have as much free time as last year. I read from midnight (start of the readathon) to 1am, went to sleep, did the intro survey this morning, went election canvassing, got home, got something to eat, and started reading again. So almost 2 hours of reading so far.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I’m just happy that I get to read the second installment of a book series right away rather than wait for a long time. It fills me with great joy that I get to have this opportunity in a readathon, no less!
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I had to go to a social engagement for a few hours. I tried to be mature about it by having a positive mindset and rewarding myself once I get home by.. what else? Reading non-stop!😀
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? That it is thrilling to participate in a wonderful activity with like-minded individuals doing the same exact thing! It gives me a sense of belongingness in a way, making reading a communal and shared experience for a change rather than being in your own private world for a while. Definitely refreshing!

  36. 1. I’m reading “Alice,” by Christina Henry.
    2. I’ve read one whole book and good chunks of two more.
    3. I’m looking forward to getting back to my white whale, “A Brief Hisyof Seven Killings,” by Marlon James.

    5. I’m surprised how fast the first half seems, but I know later that will change, haha.

  37. 1. I am still reading Pasadena by Sherri L. Smith.
    2. 0-I am 2/3 finished with Pasadena.
    3. I plan to at least begin The Mothers.
    4. I have been interrupted all day, which I expected considering my five year old’s energy level. However, I have had visits from my in-laws and parents as well, so random interruptions throughout the day have been pleasant but definitely interfering.
    5. I thought it would be much easier this time, since I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, it’s still tough for me to read due to the pressure and high expectations I set for myself.

  38. 1. Your Inner Fish 🙂
    2. Just one, Earning It.

    5. How relaxed I’m feeling about it. In previous years, I’ve been a bit more determined to be reading ALL of the time.

  39. 1. Currently reading Doctor Who: The Sleeper in the Dusk – Arthur Darvill is narrating and its freaking awesome!

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? It has gone pretty well.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? Very well planned, fun, and no pressure.

  42. Reading Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Brash Blonde
    One finished
    I don’t have much of a plan
