Cheerleading Sign Ups are Live!

Gimme a Y. Gimme a O. Gimme a U! What’s that spell? YOU! Cheerleading for US! Woot! Remember, the cheerleaders are JUST as important as the players! So grab those pompoms, write out your best cheers, and join us for some cheering this April 27th.

What does it mean to be a cheerleader for Dewey’s Read-a-thon?

It means having a great time while encouraging others by leaving a cheer or rhyme on their blog.

You can read and cheer, in fact we encourage it!

Anyone can sign-up to be a cheerleader! There are some who solely devote their time to cheering but many readers enjoy cheering. Most readers will take an hour or two to go around and encourage other readers. While reading is the main focus of the read-a-thon it’s the interactions and connections you make that make the event so special.

How much time do I need to devote?

You can devote as much as 12 hours to as little as an hour. It’s whatever works best for your schedule!

How does this work?

There will be hundreds of readers to visit during the Read-A-Thon but don’t fret you do not have to cheer for them all. Just a few days before the event you will be assigned a cheering squad based on the number of hours you said you could cheer. Each squad is then assigned a group of readers but you can ofcourse cheer for those listed in the other squads!

Hip Hip Hooray!~ Now what you say?

  1. I signed up for cheerleading last time. Cheering was really fun, and I encountered some interesting blogs. I really recommend it to people who are thinking of cheering for the first time! For me this year, I think I’m going to just read. I think I have to try to focus on just the one thing this time. But for all you others who are thinking of signing up, do it! It is part of the readathon experience!

  2. I signed up several days ago but would like to know how cheerleading works with Twitter? I’m thinking more about the Cheerleading Groups – do they have their own Twitter group or … little lost here. :O)

    My twitter is @aarluuk

Thanks in advance for the help. Looking forward to cheering (and some sneaky reading!). :O)

  3. I’m planning to cheer for 4 hours.

This will be my 6th readathon but FIRST for cheering. I’m not the rah-rah cutesy-type so I’d love some advice from other readers on what is helpful and encouraging throughout the hours. Looking forward to adding this to the mix but kinda nervous!

  4. Hi Nolatari

I was a cheerleader last time. I have to admit at cringing a little at being a “Tootsie Roll” – I’m male, six foot two inches tall and definitely not built like a cheerleader, or a Tootsie Roll for that matter! ;O)

But, and this is the important thing, cheering is pure fun. I spent my hours of cheering by visiting the blogs and twitter accounts of the readers I was assigned. I made a point of writing some encouraging words and commenting on what they were reading or what challenges they were doing based on their blog activity.

I tried to be strategic and chose specific hours to cheer when I knew I would otherwise be falling asleep.

As a cheerleader it is important to be visible and interested in what your assigned readers are reading and doing. But it is not difficult. Follow the link to a blog, write a comment and then move on to the next. You get to read loads of interesting blogs and to “meet” readers from all over the world.

Leaving Tweets was a little more challenging for me as I was/still am new to Twitter. But it can be done.

I don’t know what I will be this year, but I had to smile every time I wrote “Hi, this is Chris from Team Tootsie Rolls …”. However, I can live with it for two read-a-thons a year. LOL

    Hope this helps.

  5. Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers?

I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard
    on. Any suggestions?

  6. You ought to take part in a contest for one of the
most useful websites on the net. I’m going to highly recommend this web site!

  7. I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you create this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?
Plz respond as I’m looking to construct my own blog and would like to know where u got this from. kudos
