Hour 12 – You Can’t Read All Day…If You Don’t Start in the Morning!

FYI (4)

ReaderbuzzHowdy! Hola, amigos. Hi, y’all!

It’s me, Deb Nance from Readerbuzz. I’m here to co-host the Readathon for the next two hours.

Am I ever ready to co-host?! I spent last week at the Texas Library Association Conference in Houston. I read books. I talked books. I ate and slept books.

dewey 6

Here are the 275 free books I brought home from the conference. I certainly have a few books to choose from during the readathon!

One session I attended at TLA was moderated by Teri Lesesne and Donalyn Miller. You know these folks, don’t you? They are the Nerdy Book Club. They shared some cool reading thoughts with us and I just had to share some with you:

And…

Give yourself a huge round of applause. You made it halfway! Awesome. On to the Mid-Event Survey Mini-Challenge!

See you next hour!

Take care,

    3. Looking forward to finishing Tuesdays with Morrie but it’s such a tear jerker already
    4. I’ve only had interruptions that I’ve created for myself so I don’t go insane sitting in one spot all day 😉
    5. How much I’ve actually read so far! When I created my TBR pile of 4 books I was hoping to get through one of them!!

    4. Not too many, but I’ve taken them as opportunities to get up and stretch.
    5. That I can get burnt out on reading if I don’t get enough movement. I always thought I was a certified couch potato.

  6. 1. What are you reading right now? Beloved by Toni Morrison
    2. How many books have you read so far? 2
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?The Man in the High Castle

Actually, I think I might start Sailor Moon volume 2, Fruits Basket volume 2, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Yes! My mom, dad, partner, AND landlord all got in my way during different times! I rolled with it. My loved ones deserve my attention, even on days like this. My landlord didn’t, lol, but sometimes we do what we have to do.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I’m surprised by how few of my BookTube friends are tweeting about it. 🙁 I follow so many BookTubers and yet I feel like not a single one of them is tweeting about #readathon today.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon so far? How unapologetically distracted I get seeing what other readers are posting on social media. My mind says I should feel guilty whenever I’m not nose deep in my book, but the sense of community makes all that guilt vanish.

  13. Still reading Watchers of Time. Getting really gd now.

This is still the first bk I’ve picked up. Apparently I’m not as quick a reader as I used to be.

People keep texting me! Aaaaahhhhhhh. One I don’t mind but the rest? I’ve tried to be sbort with them. They know its readathon day! Sadly, this hasn’t deterred them at all!

Yes, currently away for the weekend, with too much to see. Didn’t worry me too much, read when I could.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
The amount of people participating. It’s great!

  17. 1. I’m currently reading “Is it Night or Day” by Fern Schumer Chapman!
    2. I’ve read one full book, the last 60% of a book I’d already started, and I’m almost halfway done with my current read.
    3. I don’t know how much more I can participate in, but starting my reread of The Book Thief would be nice!
    4. I haven’t had too many interruptions. My family has been pretty distanced from me, since they know how grumpy I’ll get if they interrupt me.
    5. Probably the fact that I can’t finish 5 books in a day😂 it’s my first readathon, and I had so many goals and I imagined so much, and my goals were not hit. It’s still fun, though, and I’m proud of my reading!

5.Im amazed and awed by this fantastic community! I love interacting with fellow book junkies 🤓

  29. 1.) I’m reading The Girl on the Train (about 14% left until the end!)
2.) I’ve only completed one so far (going to a Saturday class for 5 hours derailed me from the readathon)
3.) I’m looking forward to Anna and the French Kiss
4.) That 5 hour class (plus an hour commute each way) was my main interruption in the readathon. The fact that I’m so, so tired is also preventing me from reading as much as I want.
5.) I’m surprised at how many mini-challenges there are. I had said that I was going to participate in all of them, but I’ve only done a couple.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I live next door to a brand new Buona beef which has a drive-thru. Since it is gorgeous in Chicago I have all my windows open which means a lot of “I’ll take a 6-inch beef sandwich with hot peppers.” After a month I have learned to ignore the orders. Actually, I wish I could yell my order out the window because a beef sandwich sounds great.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I am always surprised by the amount of book recommendations I pick up during the Read-a-thon. I should make a list and use this as my TBR pile for October.

  38. 1. What are you reading right now?
    — Sword Art Online: Aincrad, Vol. 1 (the novel, not the manga)
    2. How many books have you read so far?
    — Read 1/2 of one (finished it), listened to the first 4 chapters of an audiobook, and read most of another (from Q #1)
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
    — I don’t have any firm plans (I didn’t make a TBR), but I think I’ll either read a romance (historical, maybe) or a manga
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
    — I can get distracted by social media, I guess. I’ve been taking a 5 or 10 min break from reading every hour or so and checking up on Twitter & Dewey’s website. This seems to be working well for me (not too much distraction, but enough to be a break from reading).
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
    — How quickly me Twitter has exploded. When I get on my computer for a break, my Twitter tab will often show that I have 150-200 new tweets.

  39. 1. Finishing After the Fall by Arthur Miller
    2. I’ve finished one book
    3. I am looking forward to reading Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell

    5. Some of the challenges seem really time consuming, when you are suppose to be spending your time reading.

  40. 1. Currently reading: Grayling’s Song by Karen Cushman
    2. So far I’ve finished one book but I’m about half way through number 2!
    3. Looking forward to? I honestly didn’t think I’d get this far but I’m either going to start Cress or Assassin’s Blade next.
4.Interruptions? Oh dear, yes! My toddler only has me to entertain her and she doesn’t like if I’m not paying attention to her so my reading has been a page or two squeezed in throughout the day!
5.Surprises? That I’m on my way to finishing my 2nd book today! I don’t usually do so well with short read-a-thons! Otherwise I’m surprised at the hourly posts! We should have a busy event like this with challenges and discussions without adding in trying to read nonstop all day! 🙂

  41. Just left a link to my completed mid-way survey. I’m surprised at how much reading I’m doing, given what a distraction instagram is!

  42. Mid-Event Survey:

    1. What are you reading right now? The Quantum League by Mathew J Kirby.
    2. How many books have you read so far? 2!
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? A book called Scavenger. I don’t know what it’s about, but I’m excited to find out.
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Well, my family wanted Thai food, so I left the house to go pick up the food. The library is right next to the Thai restaurant though, so I picked up a few books while I was there. I knew there were going to be interruptions, so I’m not that bothered by them.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How quickly the time goes by. It seems like I just strarted and its already half way over.

  43. Halfway point Mini Challenge:

    1) I’m currently reading To Kill A Mockingbird. I started around 10 am at page 50, had lots of distractions, and have finally made it to page 200. Hope to finish it soon!

    2) I’ve read part of Wild, part of The Phantom Tollbooth and part of TKAM

    3) after TKAM, I am looking forward to starting either Fun Home or The Buried Giant

    4) interruptions have been caused by a noisy coffee shop that was a failed choice for a place to read and also trying to corral my dogs. I finally told my husband it was his turn to babysit the pups so I could get some serious reading done.

    5) I’m surprised I couldn’t get more done, but at the same time, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far. I’ve read over 200 pages, which is more than I have read in a day since I was probably in middle school and had that luxury.

  44. 1. What are you reading right now?

    Soundless by Rachelle Mead

    2. How many books have you read so far?

2 (One I had already started a while ago) and halfway through a third.

Finishing Soundless. And my comic book (Mad Max)

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Yes, my friend came over with a little kid, and they stayed around for about three hours. I read while they played video games. (This makes me sound like we are all kids, but nope, I’m a grown-up living on my own. There was only one kid here)

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

How much I miss having blanket-forts.

  45. 1. What are you reading right now?
Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge
    Black Widow
    2. How many books have you read so far?
1, I finished Trial By Fire
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
    Glass Sword

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I am surprised that I let go of the data tracking that I planned to do: start/stop times, pages read, etc. In future readathons I will just focus on reading and let the rest go. Tracking minutes takes up precious reading time!
