Hour 18 – Audio to the Rescue!

Hour 18 – Audio to the Rescue!

fyi

Hey hey! Andi from Estella’s Revenge back again. I tell ya, the last few readathons audiobooks have really saved my life. It seems like I can never really focus on Readathon day whether there are administrative things to do or family events to attend.  In April, my audiobook of choice was Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and now it’s Yesternight by Cat Winters.

Are you an audiobook listener? Did you listen to one this time around? What would you recommend to an audio newbie?

Hour 17 – Let’s Get Weird

Hour 17 – Let’s Get Weird

fyi-1

Hi again, it’s Julianne back for Hour 17 – my last hour co-hosting! We had a moment of relaxation last hour, but now it’s time to ramp it up and get real weird. Regardless of your preferences, reading outside of your box is an amazing way to jump start your reading-love. If you’re feeling a little tired out and you’re kind of going through the motions of reading but not really absorbing anything anymore, it might be time to stray from your reading plan and grab something weird. Reading a book in an experimental format or in a created dialect is the perfect way to shock your system and excite your brain into focusing on reading again. Or, really, any book that makes you audibly say “WTF?!” (And if you’re not at the point of talking to yourself by Hour 17, you’re really not doing readathon right.)

Need any strange book recommendations? Or too tired to pick between a number of weird books you have on your shelves that you don’t really know much about? Throw me a tweet at @readathon – I’d love to chat. Don’t forget – read what’s weird to you! If you just read literary fiction and hobbits are weird to you, it might be time to curl up with my boy Samwise Gamgee (the true hero of the story, let’s be real). And if you need more suggestions to perk up your reading, check out my Gamify Your Readathon post from earlier this week! Tell me what weird reading you’re going to try out in the comments.

Good luck, book babes! We’ve got this.

Hour 16 – Let’s Chill

Hour 16 – Let’s Chill

fyi-2

Oh hey, beautiful reading angels. It’s your new best reading friend, Julianne from Outlandish Lit! I’m going to be co-hosting this hour and the next, so STRAP IN. I don’t know about you, but I always have a super hard time finding as much reading time as I’d like for readathon. No matter what job I have any given year, I’m always working at least a little on Saturday. Luckily it’s been a very bookish few hours of work.

I recently got back from meeting and photographing Mark Frost, co-creator of Twin Peaks, at the reading of his new book The Secret History of Twin Peaks. AAAHHH. I’m so hyped, I’m definitely going to dig into this book in the next few hours before I inevitably fall asleep (I promise I won’t fall asleep before I’m done co-hosting, gang). I’ve got work in the morning, but I’m going to read like there’s no tomorrow. And by that I mean chill out and embroider a forest scene while listening to my Don DeLillo audiobook.

What are you doing to chill out but keep reading as the night goes on? We’ve got to pace & be kind to ourselves, friends!! Hold the espresso shots for a little bit later.

Welcome to hour 15! Time flies when you’re having fun, right?

bookathon

Dewey’s is definitely a marathon and not a sprint so don’t worry about taking breaks. DO take breaks. And maybe on one of those breaks you can go cheer for your fellow readers. They’ll love it. And you’ll love encouraging someone else.

Don’t forget to get a drink and move around for a few minutes. Then get back to enjoying your reading 🙂

I’ve enjoyed hanging out with you guys. I hope your Dewey’s Readathon is super fun and super productive!

Dana back for hour 14!

This is one of the best days of the year but sometimes we can get caught up comparing ourselves to other readers out there. It doesn’t matter if you read fast or if you read slow. It doesn’t matter if you read 15 books or 1. What matters is that you have FUN! Read what you can, when you can. I am a slow reader with 2 little active boys so I won’t be able to read all the books. But that’s ok….any reading is good reading!

Reading has me like…

Hour 13 – Buying all the books for Dewey’s

Hour 13 – Buying all the books for Dewey’s

fyi-6

We’re in hour 13!

I’m Dana and I’ll be with you for the next few hours. Dewey’s is my most favorite bookish event and I’m so happy that I’m back to co-host. Having 24 hours devoted to JUST READING *angels singing* is a really good excuse to get a new book or 10 so I bought a couple specifically for the readathon. Not that we need excuses to buy books, though, am I right?!

forgetful-fish-dory_559b363bd577b4951

So tell me…anyone else buy any specifically for Dewey’s?

Hour 12 – Coffee Is Your Best Friend

Hour 12 – Coffee Is Your Best Friend

fyi-10

HOUR 12 IS UPON US, MY FRIENDS! And if you’re looking at this post right now, you’re kick-butt because you’ve made it to the halfway point and you’re still here! YAY YOU!

I apologize to the non-coffee drinkers amongst us, but right about now you’re needing something to keep you going! Since everything else is illegal, YAY FOR COFFEE!  Not hating on tea but coffee is just boss, and this post is to encourage coffee-lovers to pour another cup! There’s actually a lot of encouraging research pointing to the fact that coffee is pretty darn good for us–in moderation, of course.

giphy-3

If you’d like to take a break and read about coffee (it’s still reading and it counts!), feel free to check out the links below:

giphy-5

DISCLAIMER: Of course, friends, don’t drink more coffee than is right for you. And remember to rest and sleep up well when the ‘thon concludes! We don’t want anyone getting sick or having severe read-a-thon jetlag. This post does NOT in any way encourage the over-consumption of coffee or caffeine. Enjoy responsibly! 😉

Enjoy your cup and get back to kickin’ those pages! It’s been fun hosting Hours 11 & 12 but I’m signing off. Now I must get back to my own reading and my lovely java juice. Cheers!

Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now?
2. How many books have you read so far?
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

Hour 11 – Choose Your Own Nightmare

fyi-18

Hey wonderful Read-a-thon people! Missed you guys so much. I think it’s my 3rd or 4th Dewey’s and this is my 2nd time co-hosting; I couldn’t be happier to do it! I have to say that I’m loving Dewey’s in October. This time of year is made for reading.

You’ve made it to HOUR 11! Woo-hoo! Do you know how awesome that is?! Take a moment to pat yourself on the back and dust off those cookie or Doritos crumbs😉.  Many of us are reading in various spooky genres (horror/suspense/mystery) because Halloween is just a week away. I’ve got an unofficial Hour 11 challenge for you all!

Choose your own nightmare and leave one of the spookiest passages you’re reading or have read during the ‘thon in the comments! Please include title and author of book because we all want to know which book you’re reading.

Hour 10 – Because reading is your ONLY priority

Hour 10 – Because reading is your ONLY priority

fyi-17

Hello again! It’s Allison from The Book Wheel and I’m back again for another hour, so thanks for keeping me around! For those of us with spouses, partners, significant others, kids, or parents living with us, Readathon can be a stressful time. I’m sure most of our others are aware of the fact that books are a priority in life, but when Readathon time comes along, it becomes the ONLY priority in life. After participating in several of these, my husband and I have come to an understanding about how things are going to go down. It is as follows:

  • I spend weeks reminding him that, unless he is offering food or snacks, I am invisible.
  • He is forced to sleep in the spare room because we learned, after the first Readathon, that I have to move around a lot come 2 a.m.
  • Things are easier if he picks up some overtime that day because I always end up audiobooking it and purging/cleaning for a few hours.
  • Dinner is frozen pizza and I am not making it.

This is, of course, easier said than done and is much more doable because we don’t have kids, but I think setting some ground rules ahead of time helps things go more smoothly and prevents unnecessary demands on my time and attention.

Now tell me, what are your ground rule? Do you kick people out of the house? Lock yourself away in a spare room? Head to Starbucks for a few hours to get in some uninterrupted reading time (even though we know you end up people-watching)? Audiobook it while cleaning? I want to know!

Hello Readathoners! My name is Allison and I blog over at The Book Wheel and I am thrilled to be back again this year – thank you so much for having me! We’re still in the early hours so I know you are all super-motivated and ready to make it through the next few hours and there are some great challenges to participate in (see below).

Us avid readers know that reading is an extreme sport – it requires dedication, perseverance, and physical endurance. Even though reading can be physically painful, it’s worth the sacrifices, am I right? I, for one, have been told on multiple occasions that my tendonitis and dry eyes stem from reading too much. And let’s not even talk about the number of times I’ve dropped a book on my (or my husband’s) face. But do I give up? No! Because reading is LIFE and we Readathoners know that the sacrifices are worth the rewards. Plus, wrist brace and eye drops can work miracles.

But enough about me – tell me about YOUR reading injuries! Have you dropped a book on your face? Had your arm fall asleep and then give yourself a black eye when you move it (No? Just me?)? Tweaked your back from lounging for too long?
